Classification of Regional Traffic Control Methods
There are various ways to control the traffic at multiple intersections in urban areas, which can generally be classified according to control strategies and control structures.
Classification by control strategy:
(1)Regional traffic fixed-time offline control method: This method is based on the historical statistical data and current situation survey data of traffic flow within the region. It uses a computer for offline calculation and optimization processing to obtain an optimal signal timing scheme. The timing scheme will be stored in the control computer for the signal controller to select under different traffic conditions. This method is suitable for regional road networks with relatively stable traffic flow.
(2) Regional traffic adaptive online control method: This method is based on the real-time traffic flow data collected by vehicle detectors installed in the regional road network. It conducts online calculation and optimization processing, and this method can well adapt to the random changes of traffic flow.
Classification by control structure:
(1)Regional traffic centralized computer control structure method: This method connects all the signal machines in the region into a network, and uses a small or medium-sized computer or multiple computers connected online to centrally control the entire system. It belongs to the master-slave distributed control method, and its principle and structure are very simple.
(2) Regional traffic hierarchical computer control structure method: This method divides the entire traffic signal control system into two subsystems, an upper layer and a lower layer. The upper layer subsystem receives the intersection timing schemes from the lower layer subsystem, conducts coordinated analysis and processing of these timing schemes from an overall perspective, so as to correct the timing schemes of the lower layer subsystem; the lower layer subsystem then makes necessary adjustments according to the corrected schemes. The upper layer subsystem mainly completes the task of coordinated optimization of the entire system, and the lower layer subsystem mainly completes the task of executing the timing adjustment of intersections within the region.
